Naganuma
Dance is a contemporary dance company based in New York City.
Drawing from a wide range of forms, the movement vocabulary employed
reflects elements of modern dance, hip-hop, martial arts, ballet, and
traditional Japanese dance. Known to bring high velocity, ferocious
movement, innovative partnering, and evocative visual imagery to the
stage, this dynamic ensemble is comprised of performers from Japan,
Kenya, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. At times, the company employs
motion as a medium for reflection/commentary on social realities. Often,
however, movement is approached as part of a greater aesthetic drive,
at one with the meaning. Audiences are transported into an alternate
environment, one where imaginative props, lighting, and sound design
create new spaces for invention and play.
Naganuma Dance seeks to explore that place where the lines between the
real and the illusory, conscious and unconscious, human and otherworldly
blur, intersect, and in fleeting pockets of time, disappear.
The rich and varied life/movement perspectives of the multi-ethnic,
global performers are the life force of the company. Through performance,
teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration, members of Naganuma Dance
hope to share the artistic process cross-culturally and through lines
of class and gender.
